Prometheus (gefesselt)

Category: Performance

Category: Durational perfomance/installation/reading

Language: German

How to deal with your ties? They cannot be cut.

Februar 1958, Braunkohlentagebau Klettwitz.

It opens its doors every day. Steady Glorious Humble: An anchor in the stresses of student life. A sanctuary of warmth, comfort, togetherness and spice: MENSA. This evening, we want to pay tribute to it. We gather to honor what we so often overlook - in evening dress and table manners, we want to let it shine for once, as mensa does for us in the dark, hopeless hours of our long days. A celebration with shared trays and evening dress. With full glasses and cheerful company.

Category: Live-Audioplay

Language: German

Hey, one question. Could you do me a favor? I need a text for an live audioplay that deals with the conditions and the pressure of artistic productions. It’s supposed to be around 30 min long and is already fixed in the festival's schedule.
Sadly my job and university take up a lot of capacities right now and I don’t have time to write a text myself. Could you write one for us? I can’t pay you but if the festival orga is fine with it we could add you to our credits.
Oh, and deadline would be tomorrow at 2 pm.
Thank you so much! Take care

The people in our respective portrait series all want to change the world somehow – but they can’t do it (but why?). And also: grief, loss, Spießigkeit, growing up, laughter, spite, queer family, boredom.

Isaak photographed his queer friends and found family through the years (2018-2026) and somehow along the way, these pictures grew into a little collection - people dealing/ battling with/ surviving depression and loss, but (sometimes) also a near-endless amount of queer joy and "yeah SO WHAT" attitude. & mischief. & a wink, and, "the gentleness that comes, not from the absence of violence, but despite the abundance of it" (Richard Siken: Snow and Rain)

Sonja shows a work in progress of a new project about – äähm –
What is this (idealized) image of a rebellious youth? How can I become young? Why is boredom so stylisch? When is the best moment to refuse? Who is coming along? Where do we want to go? Can we change everything now please and could I get some icecream for the celebration of the revolution?

A cylinder of light and shadow turns slowly, summoning inner landscapes that belong neither fully to memory nor to the present. The body, crossed by luminous pulses, enters a suspended state: somewhere between trance and wakefulness, vision and rest.
The installation offers a space to lose the orientation of time and listen to the images that emerge behind closed eyelids.

Sarah Marsh - DOD (album listening party)
(Feedback Jar)

Category: Listening party/listening event

Language: English

DOD is the debut album by Malte Schuster‘s experimental and noise music project Sarah Marsh. Released last year on cassette via the North English label Industrial Coast, DOD is an album full of sampling, noise, electronic dance music, industrial hip hop and halves. Constantly split, DOD features a half of industrial dance music and another of chugging electronic rhythms, noise, distortion and blown out beats.
The influence of industrial hip hop legends Dälek alongside modern abstract electronic musicians like Richie Culver can be heard across the project, to the point that Richie Culver‘s „A Rebel Stuck on Pause“ was sampled on the industrial techno song „I wanna be real“.

Assembled over a span of two years, the songs on DOD range from endless rhythms like on the hypnotic opener „Soaked“ over a small moment of peace in the transcendental „Down a spiral, into the living basement“ to songs that end up in complete walls of harsh noise, like the closer „Bird Wheel“.

"DOD became a project of two halves, a coin with two sides. Both have a distinct sound and texture but somehow come back to having the same acronym as a name. What DOD actually stands for? Who the hell knows. Anything stands for anything. Nothing stands for nothing. Two ways of seeing one thing."

As I am finally realizing my wish for Top surgery this year and paying for it privately, I am organizing a fundraiser. I want to organize a fun and queer open stage. This will happen during Theatermaschine, a student-led festival by the institute of applied theatre studies in Gießen. This will happen June 4th. This will happen on one of our stages within the institute in Gießen.
Maybe there are some people out there, looking for an opportunity to try Drag out for the first time or seasoned kings and queens ready to take the stage. Or you discovered a new talent or …..

If you think that this might be interesting to you or people you know, please reach out to me and share this with them. If you would like to do something entirely different, please feel free to contact me (trillitzschmyriam24@gmail.com) anyways and maybe we can figure something out together. Being a fan of something or someone and wanting to get as close to them as possible runs through our lives like a common thread. The feelings within us that are being evoked through their songs makes us feel like we’ve known them for years, even though they don’t even know us. But why do we cling to people we’ll never be able to reach? How can artists evoke so much in us and shape entire generations? How can a single person contribute so much to our past, present, and future that we feel so deeply connected to them?
We want to look back and reflect on how being a fan has shaped us and find a creative way to engage with our past and present.

She wanted to become a rock star and apparently still does. Somewhere between the teenage confessions and the electric guitar, between the crush she never got and the chords she almost remembers, the dream didn't die — it just got tangled. Dear Diary, My Amp Is Too Loud is a performance about the version of myself I once wanted to become. The cables are still there. The angst has added up. And then Occasionally I Delete a Loop to Make
Room for More, for 4:44:44

An inverted screening, not showing Jonas Mekas' 2000 film "As I Was Moving Ahead, Occasionally I Saw Brief Glimpses of Beauty", the projector facing the audience instead of the screen. The film's soundtrack is playing inaudibly quiet from the projector's speaker, little bits getting amplified and looped, laying out a new track for another film.

Actually, anything can happen between the projector and you. You are welcome to enter and leave at any time. Bring a pillow, blanket, fall asleep. Or keep your eyes wide open. Cover them, with your hands, underneath some cloth, a hood, the blanket, make the colours change. Watch the light at the end of the tunnel. It stays the same. Nothing will happen.

Noon Mountain practice

Category: Video Installation

Language: -

Letting sedimented anger unleash, feel safe, alchemise. Climbing in silence above the castle, above the statue of the Virgin, on the top of one of the many dry mountains of Blanca, journaling and shouting. Letting the scream to hit me back and move forward. To the valley, to the lake though the mountains. The 3-week daily practice was influenced by a series of beautiful encounters. Starting with the screaming workshop with Antonia Beer, The Sunrise River Plunge and journaling with Raegan Truax, Justine’s Leichtling practice of screaming during her residency at AADK, and Ana Isa´s Albano Araújo durational performance.

Do you remember when we had *it*? The feeling, that we could become someone so so special, achieve all the goals and dreams. well... was it confidence, delusion or hope? (and if you still have it – what are you on?)
In this unfinished project the question is asked how to become great or at least better than before.
How to keep on peaking and never glow down, how to still get an olympic medal even at your big age and how to *cut ties* with dreams that aren’t even yours anymore.

Joan or Embers

Category: Performance

Language: English/Polish/German

In recent years, we have witnessed a wave of bio-fascists sweeping across countries—they are fearless, protected, and believe in only two biological sexes. When I was given the opportunity to present a short performance piece in Suwałki in 2024, I was simultaneously reading the biography of Joan of Arc. I decided they were a figure worth reviving for the local audience. Joan—saint, visionary, warrior, madwoman—did not renounce their voices, beliefs, or expressions, and as a result, they were burned alive. In their story, I see a figure of radical freedom and transgression; historical proof that people who transcend gender norms and social roles have always existed, and their bodies have often stood up—for faith, for the agency of their beliefs, for the right to be.
“Joanna or Embers” would be a continuation of my exploration of how to performatively resurrect Joan of Arc in the form of a performative lecture and a choreographic embodiment of the character through iconographic references. I would realize the entire project together with Andrea Bylińska (playing the cello live). On stage, I would portray a contemporary Joan: flirtatious, possessed, disobedient, sensual, lost, and enlightened. I am particularly interested in the relationship with the audience—eye contact, shared gestures, inviting the audience to journey through the successive phases of her biography. Can we cast an emancipatory spell together in the spirit of Joan D‘Arc?

No cuts with Frederik Rodrian

“The Hochschulpakt is performative but (sadly) not a performance!“

Budget cuts, precarious study conditions, and uncertainty for research and teaching—these are all (goals) consequences of the so-called “Hochschulpakt”.

Last summer, the CDU-led state government of Hesse decided that there would be massive cuts to university funding in the coming years, which poses a Herculean task especially for smaller and (for the arms industry) “UsELesS” departments and institutes, including Angewandte Theaterwissenschaft.

You are cordially invited to a brief informational session and an open discussion about the budget cuts affecting our future!

Category: Ball!

Language: English

For one unforgettable evening, the ATW transforms into a dazzling and extravagant ball society under the enchanting theme “(Un)masking ATW” 🪩🎀💃🎭
The AUB courtyard will glow with delicate fairy lights in the trees, casting a warm, magical shimmer across the night. Beneath ornate masks, secrets will linger and identities blur, inviting you to step into a world where anything feels possible.

As you arrive, an announcer with a gleaming scepter proclaims your (perhaps entirely invented) noble name, accompanied by a triumphant fanfare. Dance cards await those who wish to take part in classic partner dances—though it’s just as welcome to drift freely and enjoy the atmosphere at your own pace.
Grand chandeliers may sparkle above 😱
For a few fleeting hours, reality softens, and the night belongs to imagination—until, at last, the veils fall at midnight…

So I would say my piece is about heartache, about the delicate art of detaching yourself from somebody, slowy, piece by piece, removig the layers of intertwinedness, untill you feel the wind hollowing through the absence of where once safety grew - or at least you thought so. its a slow meditation on the process of letting gow, of letting grow not only cutting back, its a very personal meditation on love and what it means to surrender oneself to its sister - grief.

and counting

Category: Performance

Language: English

and counting sets up a performance arena that answers to synthetic rules and is filled by synthetically expanded bodies. Here, two clownish figures work their tricks, between darkness and full exposure, where making sense and taking space has to constantly be re-negotiated. Words become numbers, numbers become agents of infinite possibility, of language. Inflatable costumes act as choreographers of (im)possible interactions with a world out of proportions. If we understand human bodies as a volume of numbers, how can they position themselves in an environment that relies on numbers to create meaning?

An experiment in choreographic writing, and counting is an attempt to capture states of (non)sense in a world that is increasingly difficult to count on. It invites both audience and performers to enter a state of logical delirium, where 1+1 can equal 3, if only you are willing to believe in it. And as in any true arena, the front row is never entirely out of the spotlight…

About the Festival

This year, the Institute for Applied Theatre Studies at Justus-Liebig University Gießen will be hosting the 31st edition of Theatermaschine - a theatre festival organised by students. This is an annual exhibition of the institute’s work, which will take place this year from June 3rd to June 7th. The festival offers students of the BA and MA ATW, as well as MA Choreography and Performance courses the opportunity to present their artistic works to an audience free of institutional pre-selection, in a context where they can receive feedback and criticism in order to further develop their works. These are projects that were developed by artists as part of their studies and training at the Institute of Applied Theatre Studies, where they engage experimentally with performative practices, installations or participatory projects and deal with social, political and cultural topics. The presented works and analytical discussions between the performers and the audience stand at the core of the festival. Through this year's motto - (Un)Cut Ties - we are proposing an exploration of breaking old connections, connecting new ones, questioning values and dealing with concepts of cuts and cohesion in cultural and social contexts.

The festival is the result of aesthetic, organizational, voluntary and democratic collaboration. Throughout the planning process, students acquire a vast variety of self-taught skills - ranging from public relations to festival dramaturgy and financing models. We, the organizing team of Theatermaschine 2026, want to focus on networking different theatre-relevant and adjacent institutions in order to strengthen our institute’s collaborative network.
Over the last two decades, Theatermaschine has become an event that attracts a diverse audience from the independent German theatre scene and enjoys national fame. We aim to expand our platform for communication, interaction and artistic exchange through getting in touch with other institutions of the Hessian Theatre Academy.

We have made it one of our main goals to make Theatermaschine and Applied Theatre Studies inclusive and accessible to a broader audience through a variety of aspects, including free entry to the performances. Our aim is to welcome art and theatre enthusiasts from the entire JLU student body and the city of Gießen, and hopefully, from all over Germany. In an effort to reach this objective, we are opening the doors of our institute stages, as well as collaborating with cultural institutions in the city in order to facilitate performances outside of the institute space and in alternative venues around Gießen.
